Shipping stone west: California and Colorado.

The most common question from the coasts isn't about the stone — it's whether delivery pencils. How a nationwide quote actually works, what Denver's freeze–thaw asks of a patio, and where each stone feels at home out west.

When a call comes in from Denver or San Diego, the caller has usually already fallen for the stone. The real question is quieter: does shipping it halfway across the country make any sense? Often enough, yes — and the cases where it doesn't are easy to spot early. Here is the honest math.

How a nationwide quote actually works.

We take the footprint, convert it to tonnage, and price the truck door to door. Freight is a fixed cost spread across whatever the truck carries, so the spread is everything: on a small walkway the freight can rival the stone; on a full patio, pool surround, or multi-phase build, it fades into single digits per square foot. Consolidating treads, coping, and field stock onto one truck is the whole game.

Colorado is a freeze–thaw state.

A Front Range winter will find every shortcut in a patio. This is bluestone country: dense, proven through a century of Northeastern winters, and comfortable dry-set at 1.5″ over a compacted, well-drained base — the assembly that lets water leave before it freezes. We spec Lueders more cautiously here, favoring covered and vertical work over open horizontal surfaces.

California, two climates in one state.

On the coast, bluestone's blue-grey belongs with modern lines, board-formed concrete, and fog light. Inland and south, cream Lueders keeps courtyards cool and sits naturally beside Santa Barbara stucco and clay tile. Neither climate asks much structurally — California's stone questions are almost entirely aesthetic, which is the pleasant kind.

Lead times run with the freight, not against you: most Western deliveries arrive inside two to three weeks of a confirmed order, and we schedule the truck to the job's calendar, not ours.

Freight is a fixed cost. The truck decides nothing; what you put on it decides everything.
